Abstract

In digital video decoding systems (100), MPEG compatible streams containing MPEG compatible program map information are identified and composed of channel map information (60, 22). Channel map information identifies the streams as independent groups that make up the broadcast program. Channel map information makes the broadcast channel associated with the group identifiers that are used to identify the streams as independent groups that make up the program being transmitted on the broadcast channel. Channel map information is used as a substitute for information transmitted in MPEG compatible program map information. 1. A complete tool for decoding the data stream of MPEG-compatible group program information containing program mapping information to provide the decoded program data. This includes a path for identifying the channel mapping information transmitted within the aforementioned group program information, and a path for assembling such identified information to form a channel map for identifying the independent group data streams that make up the program. This channel mapping information serves as a substitute for the information transmitted in the MPEG-compatible program mapping information, and this substitute information links the broadcast channel to the group identifier used to identify the independent group data streams that make up the program transmitted on that broadcast channel. 2. A completed instrument compliant with claim 1, whereby the channel mapping information is further linked to an independent program clock reference (PCR) value. 3. A completed instrument that complies with claim 1, whereby the channel mapping information further links the independent program to a corresponding language indicator. 4. A completed device that complies with claim 1, whereby the channel mapping information is further linked to the independent program and the corresponding physical channel carrier frequency. 5. A completed instrument compliant with claim 1, including a method for frequency modulation to receive such program transmitted on such broadcast channel using channel mapping information for the acquisition of such program. 6. A completed instrument that complies with claim 1, whereby the channel map information is further linked to the group identifier with the first and second identifiers used jointly to identify the broadcast channel. 7. A completed device compliant with claim 6, whereby such decoder obtains the program transmitted on the said broadcast channel in response to an incoming user from the said second identifying number. 8. A completed instrument in accordance with claim 1, whereby information relating the broadcast channel to the group identifier is delivered within the descriptive portion of the channel map information. 9. A completed instrument that complies with claim 8, whereby the channel mapping information links numerous broadcast channels to corresponding descriptive information. 10. A completed instrument that complies with claim 1, whereby the channel mapping information is further associated with a stream indicator that identifies the independent streams as a group of independent streams, and such stream indicator identifies that the independent streams as a group of independent streams contain at least one of a) audio information and b) video information. 11. A complete decoding tool for MPEG-compatible group program information is provided to deliver the decoded program information, which includes a pathway for identifying the channel map information transmitted within that group program information; this channel map information links the broadcast channel to the group identifiers used to identify the independent group data streams that make up the program transmitted on that broadcast channel; and a pathway for assembling this identified information to form a channel map for identifying the independent group data streams that make up the program, where the channel map information links the independent program to its corresponding language pointer. 12. A completed instrument compliant with claim 11, whereby the channel mapping information is linked to an independent program and a corresponding Program Clock Reference (PCR) value. 13. A computer-readable storage medium containing data recorded on it. This data consists of MPEG-compatible digital data representing video information comprising the video program; MPEG-compatible program map information; and channel map information contained within the said MPEG-compatible digital data. The channel map information serves as a backup for the information delivered in the MPEG-compatible program map information, and this backup information is associated with group identifiers linked to the data streams as independent groups comprising the video program. 14. A computer-readable storage medium containing data recorded on it. This data consists of MPEG-compatible digital data representing video information comprising video program information, MPEG-compatible program map information, and channel map information contained within the said MPEG-compatible digital data. This channel map information links group identifiers to the data streams as independent groups that make up the video program. This channel map information serves as a substitute for the information delivered in the MPEG-compatible program map information, and this channel map information further links the independent program to its corresponding language pointer. 15. A computer-readable storage medium that complies with claim 13, whereby the channel mapping information is further linked to an independent program clock reference (PCR) value. 16. A complete program information formation tool is provided, consisting of a program map information suitable for decoding program information into MPEG-compatible groups containing program map information to prepare the decoded program data. This includes a path for forming channel map information and a path for assembling such channel map information into a program information group for output. The channel map information serves as a substitute for the information transmitted in the MPEG-compatible program map information, and this substitute information links the broadcast channel to a group identifier used to identify the independent data streams that make up the program transmitted on that broadcast channel. 17. A completed instrument compliant with claim 16, whereby the channel mapping information is further linked to an independent program clock reference (PCR) value. 18. A completed instrument in accordance with claim 16, whereby the channel mapping information further links the independent program to a corresponding language indicator. 19. A completed instrument in accordance with claim 16, whereby the channel map information relating the broadcast channel to the group identifier is delivered within the description of the channel map information. 21. A completed instrument in accordance with claim 20, whereby the channel mapping information links numerous broadcast channels to corresponding descriptive information. 22. A completed instrument that complies with claim 16, whereby the channel map information is further linked by stream indicators to independent streams. Such stream indicators, which identify such independent streams, contain at least one of a) audio information and b) video information. 23. The method for decoding MPEG-compatible group program information containing program mapping information to prepare the decoded program data consists of the following steps: identifying the channel mapping information transmitted within the group program information and assembling the identified information to form a channel map suitable for identifying the independent group data streams that make up the program. This channel mapping information serves as a substitute for the information transmitted in the MPEG-compatible program mapping information, and this substitute information links the group identifier to the independent group data streams that make up the program being transmitted on the broadcast channel. 24. The method for shaping program information suitable for decoding program information into MPEG-compatible groups containing program map information to prepare the decoded program data consists of the following steps: shaping the channel map information and incorporating the channel map information into the program information group for output. This channel map information serves as a substitute for the information transmitted in the MPEG-compatible program map information, and this substitute information links the broadcast channel to a group identifier used to identify the data streams as independent groups comprising the program transmitted on the broadcast channel.
