Abstract

The method and equipment for identifying authorized users of a security system: A user of that security system is prompted to enter a personal identification code (PIC), which then grants them access to the security system. The PIC entered by the user is then compared against a list of authorized PICs. A user is identified as an authorized user of the security system only if the entered PIC is present in the list of authorized PICs. Each PIC on the list of authorized PICs is organized into a PIC structure consisting of multiple core digits and multiple check digits. The first digit of the check digit depends on the first group of two or more core digits, and the second digit of the check digit depends on the second group of two or more core digits. The first group of two or more core digits differs from the second group of two or more core digits.

Claims (24)

1. One method for identifying authorized users of a security system consists of the following steps: (A) notifying the user of the security system to enter a personal identification code (PIC) into the security system; (B) receiving the PIC entered by the user into the security system; (C) comparing the PIC entered by the user against a list of authorized PICs; and (D) identifying the user as an authorized user of the security system only if the PIC entered by the user is present in the list of authorized PICs; where each PIC in the list of authorized PICs is arranged in a PIC configuration consisting of multiple core digits and multiple check digits, and where the first digit of the check digits has a value that depends on the first group of two or more core digits, and the second digit of the check digits has a value that depends on the second group of two or more core digits. A two- or multiple digit axis; the first group of such a two- or multiple digit axis will differ from the second group of such a two- or multiple digit axis. 2. Method of claim 1 in which each of the aforementioned check digits has a value that depends on a different group of two or more axis digits. 3. Method of Claim 1 in which the main numeric digit and the verification digit are spaced apart within the arrangement of the personal identification code. 4. Method of Claim 1, where the first digit is modulus n the remainder of the sum of the first group of two or more such digits, where n is a positive integer. 5. Method of claim 4 where n is less than or equal to 10. 6. Method of claim 5, where the second digit is the modulus m of the remainder of the sum of the second group of two or more such digits, m is a positive integer. 7. Method of claim 6 in which m is less than or equal to 10. 8. Method of claim 7 where n and m are equal. 9. Method of Claim 1, which states that the security system consists of a telephone dialing system for delivering confidential medical test results to multiple users, each with a unique personal identification code from a list of related authorized personal identification codes. 10. The method of claiming authorization 9, in which each of the many users is known to the telephone system, is accessed only by one of the authorized personal identification codes. 11. Method of claim 10, whereby procedure (A) consists of steps of playing a recorded message over the telephone line to prompt the user to enter the personal identification code associated with that user into the telephone dialing system. 12. The method of claim 11, in which the confidential medical test results are related to HIV test results. 13. A device for identifying authorized users of a security system consists of: (A) a user notification device, for notifying users of the security system to enter their personal identification code into the security system; (B) a personal identification code receiver, coupled with the user notification device, for receiving a first digital signal representing the personal identification code entered by the user into the security system; (C) a storage device, coupled with the personal identification code receiver, for storing a list of authorized personal identification codes; (D) a comparison device, coupled with the storage device, for comparing the personal identification code entered by the user against a list of authorized personal identification codes; and (E) a user authorization device, coupled with the comparison device, for receiving a second digital signal indicating whether the user is an authorized user of the security system. The user is identified as an authorized user of the security system only if the personal identification code... The information entered by the user is present in the list of authorized personal identification numbers; each personal identification number in that list of authorized personal identification numbers is organized as a personal identification code consisting of multiple core digits and multiple check digits, where the first digit of the check digits has a value that depends on the first group of two or more core digits, and the second digit of the check digits has a value that depends on the second group of two or more core digits. The first group of two or more core digits will differ from the second group of two or more core digits. 14. The instrument of claim 13, in which each of the aforementioned check digits has a value dependent on a different group of two or more digit-based digits. 15. The apparatus of claim 13, in which the aforementioned axis digits and the aforementioned check digits are omitted within the arrangement of the aforementioned personal identification code. 16. The apparatus of claim 13, where the first digit is modulo n, is the remainder of the sum of the first group of two or more such digits, where n is a positive integer. 17. The apparatus of claim 16, where n is less than or equal to 10. 18. The apparatus of claim 17, where the second digit of such a axis is modulus n, the remainder of the sum of the second group of such two or more digits, m, is a positive integer. 19. The apparatus of claim 18, where m is less than or equal to 10. 20. The apparatus of claim 19, where n and m are equal. 21. The device of claim 13, which is a security system, consists of a telephone dialing system for delivering confidential medical test results to multiple users, each with a unique personal identification code from a list of related authorized personal identification codes. 22. The device of claim 21, each of which multiple users are known by the aforementioned telephone dialing system, specifically by one of the various personal identification codes. 23. The device of claim 22, which is a user notification device, consists of a device for playing a recorded message over the telephone line to notify the user to enter the personal identification code associated with that user into the said telephone call system. 24. The apparatus of claim 23, in which the confidential medical test results are consistent with various HIV test results.
