The invention provides a method of continuous delivery of a parent drug containing a lactam, imide, amide, sulfonamide, carbamate, or urea by administering an effective dose to the patient. The efficacy of the invented prodrug compounds is such that when administered to a patient, the release of the parent drug from the prodrug is sustained release. A suitable prodrug compound for use in the methods of the invention is a readily biodegradable conjugate of the parent drug which has been derivatized through a carbonyl-linked prodrug moiety. The prodrug compounds of the invention can be used to treat any condition for which a parent drug containing a lactam, imide, amide, sulfonamide, carbamate or urea is beneficial.
