Abstract

1371740 Coated optical fibre STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 29 March 1973 15097/73 Headings B5A and B5B An optical communications fibre comprising a glass optical fibre 1 and an axially orientated plastics coating formed by feeding the optical fibre 1 into a plastics tube 5 extruded from a cross-head extruder 4 and drawing down the tube 5 on to the optical fibre 1. The latter may be fed into the cross-head 3 directly from a glass drawing apparatus or from a storage reel 2. The optical fibre 1 may be cooled to ambient temperature before entering the crosshead 3. The plastics tube 5 containing, but not in contact with, the fibre 1 may be passed through a cooling trough 6, a primary capstan 7 to a drawing and sizing die 8, a capstan 9 and a storage reel 10. The drawing down may be assisted by heat. The sizing die 8 may be dispensed with. The plastics material may be polyethylene terephthalate.

Description

(5) METHOD FOR PROTECTING A FLEXIBLE HARNESS

The invention relates to methods for coating optical glass fibers used in optical transmission systems.

1 There is a known method of protecting a flexible rope by applying a shell by extrusion in a C1 syringe press.

The known method does not allow the manufacture of optical fibers with high mechanical strength.

The purpose of the invention is to protect the fiber.

This goal is achieved by that the extrusion is applied to the tow band by means of polyethylene terefg with a gap relative to the tow, after which it is cooled and the sheath is pressed to fit tightly to the tow.

The drawing shows a device for applying a protective coating on a glass fiber tow.

The shell 5 is applied with a gap on the rope, after which it is cooled in bath 6 and crimped until the shell fits snugly to the rope by pulling through nozzle 7. which increases the strength of the coating.

10.- The wrapping of the tow in the sheath is driven by rollers 8 and 9. And it winds on the bobbin 10.
