Description

Polarization rasters are known, with the mutual movement of which the intensity of the light flux transmitted through the system, which is measured with the aid of a photocell, varies. A disadvantage of known rasters is the inaccuracy of the readings, which depends on the instability of the light sources, the photocell, and especially the DC amplifier. The use of differential circuits with photocells does not eliminate the influence of the instability of the light source, since it is very difficult to select homogeneous photocells.

In the proposed polarization raster, to determine the relative shift of its elements, not the change in the intensity of the light passing through the raster is used, but the change in the polarization of light, which improves the measurement accuracy, since this excludes the amount of instability of light sources, photo cells and other circuit elements. These advantages, as a polarization raster, make it easier to manufacture a measuring installation that does not require high stability of its individual elements.

The difference of the described polarization raster from the known ones is that it is made in the form of two polarization elements, of which the first one is a glass plate with straight stripes of polaroids fixed on it, oriented so that the light beams that pass adjacent stripes , polarized in mutually perpendicular directions. The second polarization element is a usual raster consisting of transparent and opaque strips, the width of which is equal to the width of the polaroid stripes, in order to determine the relative shift of the polarization elements by the change in the polarization of light. A polarization raster can be made as a disc with polarization elements in the form of sectors.
