Description
The present invention relates to the corrosion protection of aluminum cathodes in the electrolysis of zinc and cadmium by applying a protective coating of a specific composition.
It is known that in the factory production of electrolyte zinc, sheet aluminum cathodes are used, whose service life is several months due to wear caused by corrosion of the upper part above the electrolyte as a result of the smallest acidic electrolyte splashes (aerosol) carried along. into the air by gases evolving at the electrodes. In addition, the electrolyte level in the bath is not constant, as a result of which the cathode at the top is partially covered with a layer of strongly adherent zinc sulphate, and the upper part of zinc build-up at the cathode is thinned, with torn edges, which complicates and slows down the removal of zinc and requires sharp strikes on the sheet. The latter circumstance causes warping of aluminum sheets, reaching such dimensions that the formation of holes causes short circuits.
Since the working part of the cathode, immersed in the electrolyte, is kept several times longer than the upper part, in order to further exploit the cathode, in some factories the corroded part is cut and worked with a shortened cathode.
Two copper rods supplying current are riveted to the top of the cathode. As a result of electrolyte sputtering, the contact area between the copper rods and the aluminum sheet is reduced to 50-70%; this increases unproductive energy consumption, and at the same time causes contamination of the electrolyte with copper sulphate, washed off with. rods, which adversely affects the quality and current efficiency of cathode zinc. Calculations of the copper balance in the electrolyte show that sometimes the dissolution of copper reaches 1.5-2 kg per day.
Однако часта смена этих планок и их заправка вызывают лишний расход рабочей силы и св заны с дополнительными расходами .To prevent the formation of dendrites, wooden slats are packed at the sides of the cathode. However, frequent changes of these strips and their refueling cause an extra consumption of labor and are associated with additional costs.
Warpage and formation of holes on the cathodes, as a result of tapping before stripping, is eliminated.
In addition, when zinc cathodes are mass-protected, the quality of zinc in copper and sulfur is increased, and the waste dross is reduced due to a sharp decrease in the content of copper and zinc sulfate in cathode zinc and an improvement in the structure of the sediment in its upper part.
This method of protection, without significant changes, is also applicable for the protection of aluminum cathodes.
Asbestos flour can also be used as a filler instead of pumice.
