Abstract

In this process for operating a hot separator arranged downstream of the liquid-phase reactors of the high-pressure hydrogenation of coals, tars, mineral oils, distillation and extraction products thereof and similar materials, the content of the separator is cooled by means of a cooling gas via a cooling system. In order to avoid a further chemical reaction with polymerisation and solids formation while nevertheless maintaining the highest possible temperature level in the hot separator, the temperatures of the liquid-phase product present in a conical insert and of the gas/vapour phase located in a cylindrical insert are held at the requisite values, which may be different, by means of integrated cooling circulations for indirect cooling, and, in a preferred embodiment of the hot separator being used, the conical and cylindrical inserts consisting of a square hollow profile with a cylindrical bore are wound around with windings.
