The catalytic converter (Fig. 1) comprises a housing 1 consisting of inner half-shells 2 and 3, outer half-shells 4 and 5, laid between the half-shells of thermal insulation 6, inlet 7 and outlet 8 nozzles.
Inside the housing 1 there is a catalytic unit 9, through which a Z-shaped fastening device passes in the form of a rod passing through the unit 9 along its axis, and is provided with locking elements 10 located on the end surface of the unit 9 and fixed to the housing 1 (between the flanges of the inner shell 2 and 3 and the flanges of the nozzles 7 and 8) by welding or folding lock. Element 10 fixes block 9 in the neutralizer case with the possibility of receiving both axial and radial loads. The end portions of the fastening element, perpendicular to the axis of the block, prevent the appearance of the film effect, i.e. extruding the central zone of the spiral block 9 downstream of the exhaust gas. The end portions of the element 10 are recessed into the block body (FIG. 4), which prevents the coil from being displaced relative to each other under mechanical and thermal loads.
The catalytic converter works as follows.
Exhaust gas flows through the inlet 7 to the catalytic unit 9. Inside the block 9, the gas passes through channels formed by spiral-wound flat and corrugated metal tapes, the surface of which is covered with a catalyst. In the channels, oxidation reactions of products of incomplete combustion of fuel proceed. The fastening of the block 9 in the housing 1 with the help of a rod-shaped element 10 satisfies the requirements of reliability against the film effect and also allows the block to make small elastic displacements in the radial and axial directions during thermal deformations from one operating mode to another, and also greatly simplifies the installation of a block in the converter housing.
