Description

The known methods for determining the degree of homogeneity of glass, taken as a powder, in an immersion liquid are difficult, since it is necessary either to determine the temperature range of the density within which the lightest and heaviest particles settle to the bottom or float to the top, or determine the light transmission or light scattering of glass slurry in liquid. It is necessary to make a comparison with the transmission of the liquid itself and use a thermostat with a continuously variable temperature.

The proposed method allows measurements at a constant temperature and greatly simplifies the measurement process. The method consists in measuring the width or half-width of the spectral bandwidth of the glass powder impregnated with immersion liquid at a constant temperature. Such a medium, when white light is incident on it, cuts a narrow region of the spectrum, i.e., it is a dispersive light filter. The maximum transmission of the light filter corresponds to that wavelength for which the refractive indices of glass and liquid coincide. If the glass powder is not uniform, then the condition of equality of the refractive indices of glass and liquid will be fulfilled for a number of wavelengths, i.e. the transmission curve of the optical filter will expand. Thus, the width (or half width) of the transmission curve of the light filter is a measure of its uniformity. The installation for implementing the method is schematically shown in the drawing, where the / is the source of light placed in the focus of lens 2; 3-iris diaphragm; 4-thermostat that maintains a constant temperature of the filter 5; 6-lens; 7-input and 8-output slits of the monochromator 9; 10-photomultiplier placed close to the output slit of the monochromator.
