A thermal protection unit for an automatic circuit breaker with a minimum number of components and welded electrical connections between the components comprises a terminal (20) for clamping ends of external leads having an integral conducting appendage (33) forming a cantilevered support for a bimetal plate (42) which is welded electrically to the end (35) of the appendage (33) and jointly to the end (43) of an arc-switching electrode (44). <IMAGE>
