Abstract

A washing machine includes water tub 3 installed in outer frame 1, washing/ dewatering tub 4 rotatably disposed in water tub 3, pulsator 5 rotatably disposed at an inner bottom portion of washing/dewatering tub 4, dewatering shaft 23 connected to washing/dewatering tub 4 and a brake mechanism for exerting a braking force on a rotation of dewatering shaft 23. The washing machine further includes brake release mechanism 40 for releasing the braking force of the brake mechanism, setting input unit 59 for setting a series of operations including a washing, a rinsing and a dewatering operation and controller 58 for controlling rotations of pulsator 5 and washing/dewatering tub 4 based on information set by setting input unit 59. Controller 58 performs a brake release process for operating brake release mechanism 40 to make washing/dewatering tub 4 rotatable after a lapse of a predetermined time period from a time when a power is inputted by power input unit 66.
