Abstract

According to the invention, there is provided a disc changer 1 including a plurality of trays T which respectively can be loaded with discs D and be moved substantially in a horizontal direction parallel to main surfaces of the discs D, a tray driving gear unit 20 capable of shuttling the trays T between a standby position Y and a disc exchange position X, a gear driving mechanism driven by an electrical motor to generate driving force for driving the tray driving gear unit 20, a tray triggering unit 50 capable of locking/unlocking the trays T in the standby position Y, the unit capable of pushing all trays T to engage with the tray driving gear unit 20 after unlocking the trays T and capable of driving the trays T outward from the mechanical chassis 3 toward the disc exchange position X, a recording/reproducing unit 70 for recording and/or reproducing an information signal on a disc D placed on a turntable 9, and an elevation unit 30 capable of moving the recording/reproducing unit 70 with the turntable 9 in a vertical direction. The gear driving mechanism uses a single electric motor and a single plunger unit 117 carrying two gears to perform switching between multiple gear trains.
