Abstract

A simple method for wirelessly controlling a robot by a human user is taught. To track the movements of the human user, magnetic, angular rate and gravity (MARG) sensors are used. Unlike the prior art, the algorithm of the present invention corrects for drifts in the angular rate sensor readings only when the accelerometer readings are likely to be reliable, that is, when the magnitude is close to, or equal to that of gravity. When this happens, the absolute orientation estimate is calculated directly from the accelerometer and magnetic field sensor readings. In addition, a novel method which does not require floating-point calculations is used in the spline algorithm to enable smooth movements by the robot under control.
