Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for detecting the proximity of an object to an electronic device by means of light, using fewer components than the prior art. The problem is solved in a simple way by using the light (5) from the display (2) of an electronic device (1) to illuminate possible objects (8) in its vicinity and to detect the presence or absence of objects (8) by a light sensitive detector (6) located in the device near the display (2). The invention may be used to control functions such as loudspeaker volume, display illumination, etc. of electronic devices such as mobile telephones, laptop computers, portable music playing devices, etc.
