Abstract

Pyrophoric iron prepared by gas reduction of magnetite at a temperature less than the softening point of iron is brought into contact with the pyrolysis products. A method for reducing the acid content of pyrolysis oil (vapour) generated by the rapid, low temperature pyrolysis of biological material, in order to increase the chemical stability of the oil (vapour), comprises bringing the pyrolysis products into contact with pyrophoric iron, prepared by gas reduction of magnetite (Fe3O4) at a temperature less than the softening point of iron (ca. 740 deg C).
