Abstract

An absorbent article, e.g. sanitary towel or lightweight female incontinence pad, comprises an absorbent layer (1) enclosed between a liquid-permeable inner surface layer and a liquid-impermeable outer surface layer (3), with at least one adhesive coating (4, 5) being provided on the liquid-impermeable layer. Two protective layers (6, 7) extend in the article length direction over its entire length and partly in its cross-direction from opposite length edges towards the length symmetry axis of the article. Each protective layer can be folded between a first position where it covers an adhesive coating, and a second position where it covers the edge region of the liquid-permeable layer. The protective layers have a low adhesion strength to the adhesive coating in at least the regions covered by the layer in its first position.
