Abstract

The vehicle and trailer brakes are controlled by a processor, with separate control modules on the vehicle and on the trailer. The application of the parking brake is identified and the braking control applies in relation to the parking brake eg. the brake control takes in account the effect of the parking brake. When the parking brake is released the brake control ensures that sufficient braking is applied in relation to the settings of the brake controls. The effect of the parking brake on the overall braking effect is identified by that proportion of the braking which does not respond to dynamic brake control if the parking brake is applied to enhance the dynamic braking. The parking brake effect is also identified by the brake force applied as a steady level when the vehicle is stopped eg. at traffic lights.
