SOLUTION: In the method for measuring the instantaneous tensile force applied to a web transported by a paper manufacturing machine by using a force measuring roll which is supported by at least one bearing for measuring force, electromagnetic bearings 6, 7 are employed as the bearings to support the roll 1, the electromagnetic bearings are driven by electric power cooperatively working with a control part 10, the instantaneous position of the roll 1 is compared with a prescribed position by the control part 10, the supplied electric current value is so changed as to position the roll 1 at the prescribed position, and the value of the tensile force of a web is set as a function of the alteration degree of the electric current value supplied to the electromagnetic gearing.
