Abstract

The user data is transmitted from an input route to an output route over a path which goes around intermediate routes. The system is used to further transmit control messages between the input route and the output route via the intermediate routes in a manner which does not affect the state of the intermediate routes. The control messages are encapsulated in the Internet protocol packet. The output route and the input route have different logic input sub-nets. A facility is available for diffusing a PATH message from an input route to an output route and in the output route for sending back a RESV message encapsulated in an Internet protocol data packet. The RESV message provides resource reservation protocol, an address for the output route and one for the input route, together with quality of service data required for determining a type of virtual connection to be maintained between the output route and the input route.
