Abstract
A method for determining the position of the working part of a work tool (17) capable of being moved along a defined path and mounted on a piece of heavy machinery (3), in order to stop the tool working when it reaches a pre-determined position, comprises the following steps :(a) the position of a pre-selected part of the machinery which remains stationary as the tool part moves and which has a known relationship with the path along which the tool part travels, is recorded ; (b) the position of the work tool in relation to the path of travel for the working tool part is recorded as this tool part moves along its path ; (c) the actual position of the working tool part is calculated using the difference between the positions measured in steps (a) and (b) in the same direction as the path of travel for this tool part ; and (d) a control process is initiated if the pre-determined end position has been reached by the working tool part. The equipment used for this method is also claimed, including at least one first position detector unit (4) placed on the stationary part of the machinery monitored in step (a), at least one second position detector unit (5) used for calculating the position in step (b), a processor (6) for carrying out the calculations in step (c) and the control process in step (d).
