Abstract

The local area network server is established over virtual circuits in the public switched telephone network. It is adapted to support several independent local area networks operating over a public switch telephone network. The interfacing is enacted with a modem. The server is adapted to interconnect local area network terminals belonging to a local area network. It can also establish point to point protocol links with local area network terminals. The ability is available to identify to which local area network a calling party is to be connected. Calling party authentication is by means of password authentication protocol or challenge handshake authentication. The server is adapted to act as a name server for each of the several local area networks. Facilitates are provided for allocating logical names and internet protocol to all members of a local area network.
