Abstract

Each coupling has its own pump (48,49) to produce the actuating pressure as regulated by valves (54,55) forming part of the same coupling. The pump comprises a pair of opposd counter-rotating plates (48,49) connected respectively to the intermediate shaft (3) and the spur gear and the plates are so shaped and housed in a housing of highly viscous fluid that counter-rotation of the two plates pumps fluid by friction into the cylinder (46) for the activating piston (45). The coupling of a spur gear engaged in a gear above first when driving is so related to a coupling engaged with a lower gear that the higher geared coupling also transmits torque in bottom gear. An axially adjusting control sleeve (51) concentric to the coupling can be positioned in neutral so that sleeve-connected parts (53) hold the valves (54,55) so they cancel the pumping plate action (48,49) regardless of speed. When axially offset from neutral into switching position, the sleeve sets the valves so as to feed fluid into the piston cylinder.
