Abstract
This invention relates to re-routing traffic in high data rate transmission networks and solves the problem with capacity limitations in such networks. The problem is solved by setting up additional virtual circuits, so called alternate circuits. These alternate circuits are used whenever the outgoing data link becomes overloaded due to concurrent bursts on one or more of original or the alternate circuits. Such a network (300) consists of the original circuit and the alternate circuits: the original circuit, which are the nodes (202-212) having links (214-222) between them; the alternate circuits, which are nodes (302, 306 and 304) having alternate links (308-314 and 316, 318) between them. Each node in the network has incoming/outgoing burst detectors and arbiters controlling the node.
