Abstract

A method for spooling a thin, elongated and flexible object, preferably wire or rope, onto a disposable metal-free drum (1) comprising a cylindrical case (2) with two fixed flange walls (3, 4) on either side, to form a spool with a pre-determined radius between the two end walls. The stability of these walls is sufficient to support the spool without them deforming, but not so great that they alone can resist the axial forces generated during spooling when the object is given the opportunity to be pressed down between two underlying object layers. In this spooling method, the drum is temporarily reinforced before spooling starts with a device (12) consisting of two parallel interlocking components, preferably spoked wheels (13, 14), urged tightly against the outside of the end walls within the radius of the finished spool, so that the end walls are fixed into position and can resist axial forces applied to them during spooling. The reinforcing device used in this spooling method is also claimed.
