Abstract

Preparation of caesium formate comprises the use of an electrodialysis arrangement comprising at least one electrodialysis unit divided into four cells (1-4) formed by two cation membranes and three anion membranes arranged in an alternating fashion and at least one cathode and at least one anode. The membranes extend parallel to an anion membrane located next to both the anode and cathode. A concentrated aqueous caesium salt (eg. caesium chloride) solution is introduced into a first cell (1) positioned next to the anode. A dilute aqueous sodium or potassium salt (eg. a chloride) solution is introduced to the fourth cell (4) positioned next to the cathode. A concentrated aqueous sodium or potassium formate solution is introduced to a third cell (3) positioned next to the fourth cell. An electric current is passed between the cathode and anode to form a concentrated aqueous caesium formate solution in the second cell (2) next to the first cell and a concentrated aqueous sodium or potassium salt (e.g. chloride) solution is formed in the fourth cell. Formation of these two solutions is due to ion migration or exchange through the membranes, induced by the current.
