Abstract

The device provides the axial movement of a spindle (1) which is supported by pressurised air bearings having a stator (4.1,4.2) and a cooperating rotor (3) attached to the spindle. The movement is detected by a sensor incorporated in the stator, on one or both sides of the rotor, for registering the axial movement of the spindle relative to the stator. The sensor may use a capacitive device or a pressure detection device. Its output is used for regulating the air pressure of the axial bearings for the rotor.
