Abstract
The system compresses the image using a region based coding (RBC) scheme (201) compressor. The progressive image transmission continues with RBC until the user decides that no further improvement in image quality is required or JPEG would be more suitable. If this is the case, the transmitter switches to use JPEG, the RBC compressed image being decompressed (203) so as not to lose information contained in the image already transmitted. The image obtained from decompression is subtracted (205) from the original image to form an image for a continuous tone compressor (207).
