Abstract

Air separator for a flowing fluid, consists of a vertical, cylindrical vessel (1) with liquid flowing through, across the vertical axis (2). There is a packed interceptor section (4) to take the small air bubbles known as microbubbles, coalescing them into larger bubbles. They have sufficient lift to float, ascending to the top (9) of the vessel, where the air collects, and where a valve (11) is ready to release it. The interceptor packing is novel in its multi-layered structure with channels, each layer parallel to the axis and separated from its neighbour, with many small openings permeated by the flowing fluid. The packing fills the vessel cross section. Also claimed is a procedure to make the separator.
