A chain saw includes a chain brake mechanism (2) which uses the periphery (32) of a cup-shaped reduction gear (30) as a braking surface. One embodiment uses a separate brake drum (96) which surrounds the cup gear. An alternative embodiment uses the cup gear itself as the braking surface. <IMAGE>
