The appts. comprises a work tool (6) to remove or insert a fuel rod (10) from or into the cartridge (1), and a device (11) to guide the work tool into a selected fuel rod position (12) in the cartridge. The guide device comprises a guide tool (13) to receive the work tool and a coordinate table (14) for moving the guide tool to above the selected fuel rod position. The fuel rod replacement process using this appts. is also claimed.
