Abstract
In a measuring device for determining the level of a medium, eg fuel, a recess (14) is formed in the bottom (13) of a tank (10). The volume of this recess (14) is matched to a specified quantity of residual medium. Furthermore, the one end of a level sensor (12) projects into the recess (14). Moreover, a process for controlling the engine of an internal combustion machine is proposed, in which a visual and/or an audible type of alarm device is triggered when a specific residual quantity v is reached. This informs the driver that the medium is only sufficient for a few kilometres. The engine of the internal combustion machine is switched off automatically if a further lower limit is exceeded. This prevents damage to an engine exhaust gas catalyzer if the tank (10) is completely emptied. <IMAGE>
