Abstract

Method of encapsulating radioactive waste in a capsule using a work station within a radiation-shielded region located above a base section filled with water, comprises: (a) lifting the waste out of the base section and into a container located in the radiation-shielded region which has an opening as well as an opening edge located in the base section water so that the container and the water surface form a sealed region; (b) lowering the capsule into an essentially vertical gas-filled duct with two open ends, the upper one having a sealable lid and being located in the sealed region of the container; (c) moving the capsule towards a seal beneath the lid of the gas channel; (d) taking off the sealing lids from the capsule and gas channel together; (e) lowering the waste into the capsule; and (f) taking the capsule and its lid back out again. The appts. for carrying out the method is also claimed.
