Method for determining the distance to a fault on a power line with known line impedance ZL between two stations A, B forming part of a general network with a number of parallel lines and branches, reducing the general power network to a power line which is equivalent between the stations by means of reducing the general power network around the power line to a parallel impedance ZP connected to the power line, and assigning reduced source impedances ZAT, ZBT to the stations from the general power network, and assigning to the equivalent power line equivalent source impedances at the stations equal to ZAP = ZAT x ZP/(ZAT+ZP+ZBT) (1) ZBP = ZBT x ZP/(ZAT+ZP+ZBT) (2) and by supplying the equivalent source impedances ZAP and ZBP as input date to a fault locator intended to determine the distance to a fault located on the power line between the stations (Fig. 6). <IMAGE>
