Abstract

A received radio signal S has been coded differentially in a transmitter and transmitted over a radio channel with multi-wave propagation and random phase displacement. The radio signal is sampled A/D and a signal sequence R(i) so obtained is decoded differentially to an observed signal sequence V(i) = R(i).R(i-1)* by delay and complex conjugation 10 and multiplication 11. By correlation 12 with a known synchronization sequence the delay coefficients C0, C1 of the radio channel are estimated. A Viterbi analyser 15 sets trial sequences D(i) of symbols and using the delay coefficients C0, C1 predicted signal sequences Vcircumflex(i) are generated depending upon the differential coding procedure of the transmitter. Error signals deltaM are generated between the observed signal sequences V(i) and the predicted signal sequences Vcircumflex(i). The Viterbi analyser 15 accumulates the error signals deltaM and selects the one of the predicted signal sequences Vcircumflex(i) which has the lowest accumulated error signal. The corresponding assumed trial sequence D(i)1 is most probably the data sequence the transmitter generated before the differential coding. <IMAGE>
