Abstract

A method for machining or working surfaces on metals (Fig.1 (1)). A surface layer (8), which is homogeneous with the base metal, and has self-lubricating properties, is created by melting the surface layer (3) with high energy, e.g., a laser (4), while simultaneously adding a metal, metal alloy or metal mixt. (5), in the form of Mo, to the smelt (6). A metal composite is obtd. consisting of substantially unchanged particles of the added Mo material in a matrix of the re-melt base material. Pref. added materials are Mo and Pb, Sn or In, or a combination of these substances. Mo, S or MoS2 may be added to the smelt such that it contains 5-80 vol.% Mo. Wear-resistant particles, e.g., carbides or ceramics may also be added to the smelt (0.01-80 vol.%).
