Abstract
The assembly of the outer (2) and inner (3) parts of the valve mechanism produces a fluid-tight constriction (6) which, in its proximal end, is connected to the catheter or is integral with it. The elastic part or lumen (2) expands when infusion fluid is fed under pressure, and returns to its fluid-tight constricted position after infusion is completed so that blood cannot run back through the constriction. The outer and inner parts (2,3) of the valve mechanism exposed to the blood circuit during usage lie in the same plane so that the the valve functions extend all the way outwards at the distal end.
