Abstract
One end of the measurement lance is inserted in the smelt, e.g. during a new process for a steel smelt, and the lance is connected to a spectrophotometer. The radiation emitted by the smelt because of its temp. is picked up continuously and fed to the spectrophotometer in which a continuous analysis takes place. Measurement data obtained from the spectrophotometer is continuously processed, and guiding parameters for the smelting process are altered accordingly. The lance carries a lens at its end outside the smelt, and an optical conductor (8) connects it to the spectrophotometer. It also is connected to at least one conduit for the supply of gas and/or a special coolant to enable slag to be removed from the smelt surface, and the lance and lens to be cooled.
