Abstract
The invention relates to carbon membranes for the separation of gaseous species from each other and to a process for the production of these. The membranes have uniform pore sizes of a predetermined size, with a very sharp upper size cutoff. The membranes are produced from carbon containing non-melting material in sheet form by strictly controlled pyrolysis at a certain rate of increase of temperature per unit time, in a inert atmosphere. The thus obtained membranes can be treated by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere at elevated temperature to modify pore size. The final product can be exposed to a further treatment by means of air, hydrogen or carbon dioxide, and if desired to vacuum treatment. The starting material an be pretreated with certain materials to increase dimensional stability and increase carbon yield.
