Abstract

The present invention concerns an alloy for cutting tools which contains 75-97% by weight of a hard carbonitride and 3-25% by weight of a binder metal, the hard component containing titanium as the main metal constituent, together with tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum and, if appropriate, vanadium, and, as nonmetallic constituents, carbon and nitrogen. The binder metal is chosen from the group comprising iron, cobalt and nickel. The resistance of the alloy to plastic deformation has been improved by adding tantalum as a mixed carbide Ti,TaC optionally also including Nb. <IMAGE>
