Abstract
The invention serves to provide a sensor for measuring the volumetric flow, which can preferably be employed for monitoring automatic, controlled respiration but which is also suitable for recording other, small volumetric flows of gaseous media. In the case of low flow rates the known sensors which operate on the principle of the Karman vortex street are characterised by periodic fluctuations, an inadequate signal-to-noise ratio and an equally unsatisfactory linear relationship between vortex frequency and volumetric flow. It is the aim and object of the invention to eliminate these unfavourable properties, so that there is provided a sensor having a high measuring accuracy for a wide range of flow rates, including the weak movements of gas. This is achieved with a sensor whose measuring section is provided on the inlet side with a parabolic or hyperbolic narrowing which brings about improved formation of vortices of one of its downstream flow bodies having a prismatic cross-section.
