A method and a device are described for determining a dimension (2) of a possibly moving object (4). The measuring device (6) and object (4) are moved relative to one another. The dimension (2) is scanned in individual, successive measurement steps. The measurement steps are of different size in different measuring ranges (26 to 28; 50; 80 to 82).
