Abstract

Accelerometer with an optical or electrical output signal which indicates the acceleration of a sensor element (1), with at least one mass element (2) and at least one elastic element (3) which is connected to the sensor element (1), the optical or electrical output signal being generated by a relative motion of the mass element (2) or of a part thereof in relation to the sensor element, or by internal mechanical expansions in the mass element (2) and/or of the elastic element (3). According to the invention, the accelerometer additionally comprises a damping element consisting of a gas-filled cavitation (4) which is formed by two essentially parallel surfaces (5, 6) of which one surface is formed by the mass element (2) and the other surface is formed by the sensor element or by a part that is connected to the sensor element in a flat fashion, the shape, the size and the distance of the surfaces (5, 6) from one another being dimensioned such that the fundamental natural vibration of the mass element (2) and of the elastic connection (3) are essentially critically damped. <IMAGE>
