Abstract

The invention refers to heat and sound-insulated foam glass with closed bubbles, in which the gas pressure is maximum 0, 1 Torr. The bubbles are coated with a reflective metal film. Through this, heat transfer through the bubbles is eliminated, not only by means of conduction or convection but also by radiation. The reflective metal film is made by combining glass with granules of a bubble-forming agent made of a metal or alloy, which has a steam-pressure of at least 7 Torr at the melting point. The combination is treated, so that the glass when in melted form surrounds the grains of the bubble-forming agent. Thereafter the combination is subjected to heat at such a low pressure, that the grains of the bubble-forming agent evaporate and form bubbles in the glass. When the material has then cooled slowly under low pressure, the glass hardens, where after the steam of the bubble-former sublimates on the walls of the bubbles to a reflective metal film.
