Abstract

S and SOx atmospheric pollutants are removed from a gas stream produced by incinerating combustible feedstock by passing the gas stream upward through a high temp. contact zone defined by a fluidised bed of countercurrent descending solid particulate sorbent reacting with the pollutants to formasolid prod. The combustor has opposed entry points for combustible feed and sorbent, located so sorbent and combustion prods. each traverse at least 90% of the vertical extent of the contact zone, and concn. gradients are maintained vertically. The sorbent is pref. limestone, and calcination occurs in the upper portion of the zone in an atmos. of low S concn. Amts. of sorbent are reduced, and limestone need not be precalcined. The process is useful in combustion of high S coal for driving gas turbines, or incinerating refuse, sludge and oil refinery waste, with feed fuel.
