Abstract

A method of exfoliating the coating of a coated optical fiber, which method has the steps of producing a longitudinal crack in the coating layer of the optical fiber cleaving the coating into a plurality of cleaved strip pieces while longitudinally growing the crack, and then outwardly bending off the strip pieces. The exfoliating tool is constructed to conveniently cleave the coating layer of the optical fiber and to cut the cleaved strip pieces. Thus, it does not damage the optical fiber upon exfoliating of the coating layer from the coated optical fiber, and can efficiently exfoliate the coating of the optical fiber. The tool may take the form of a sleeve or ring having knife edges, or a pair of split pieces 6', 6'' mounted at the end of grips 11', 11''. <IMAGE>
