Abstract

Anti-skid devices are mounted in a tyre so as normally not to protrude from the tyre tread. The mounting is such, however, that when the tyre skids the tips of the devices engage the road and the devices are pivoted relative to the tread so that the devices move proud of the tread and dig into the road. In some embodiments, pins are carried by flexible rods which run in the tread grooves and the flexure of which allows the devices to pivot proud of the tread. In other embodiments pins are mounted upon ridges formed in the tread grooves, which ridges flex to allow the device to move proud of the tread. The devices have minimal contact with the road during normal driving and thus there is reduced noise and road wear.
