Abstract
The measuring arrangement for determining terrestrial refraction is applied in geodesic measurements (trigonometric altitude transfers, in staking out and in precision tachymetry, steering construction machinery by means of a laser beam, precision levelling). The measuring arrangement includes a geodesic measuring instrument (T), an electronic processor and an appliance (S, E) for measuring the transit-time difference of sound waves. After the sound waves generated by a sound transmitter part (S) have traversed layers of air (e.g. at different altitude) on a representative path, the time difference is measured and employed to determine the refraction. The sound receiver part (E) includes two microphones (M1) and (M2) which are positioned vertically above one another at altitudes (Z1) and (Z2) above the surface of the earth in the immediate vicinity of the electronic tachymeter. Using the arrangement it becomes possible to determine, for a particular range as defined from the position of the instrument, continuous measured values from which the instantaneous refraction can be inferred. Terrestrial refraction can be determined more accurately than in conventional methods for engineering geodesic and constructional work. <IMAGE>
