The detector 26 comprises a plurality of pairs of photo-transistors Fig.4 (not shown). The members of each pair are closely associated and are connected to a circuit Fig.3 (not shown) which issues a signal to be counted only if one member of the pair is illuminated and the other is in shadow. Each pair of photo-transistors is assembled in a permanent magnet ring (25) which provides for attachment to a metal panel but permits individual pairs to be moved around according to the kinds of bottles to be counted.
