Abstract

Hydrolysable acetals and hemiacetals of aminoaldehydes having the formula 1:- R(NHA<1>)rNHA<2>CHO (1> wherein R represents hydrogen or -A<3>CHO; A<1>, A<2> and A<3> independently represent divalent alkylene (including cycloalkylene) groups; and r represents 0 or an integer inhibit cell proliferation and are believed to be useful in the treatment of cancer and tissue and organ rejection and in contraception. Preferred acetals are those of the formula 5:- <IMAGE> wherein R<5> represents hydrogen, (CH2)p CHO or <IMAGE> n, m and p independently represent integers from 2 to 12; and R<3> and R<4> independently represent alkyl or alkenyl groups containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms and optionally substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy or halogen or R<3> and R<4> together represent an alkylene group containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms. Some, but not all, of the acetals and hemiacetals are novel compounds. The novel compounds include those of formula 1 in which R is hydrogen and r is 1 and those of formula 5 in which R<5> is hydrogen and r is 1.
