Abstract

1472754 Pipe joint W SCHWARZ 23 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 17740/74 Addition to 1396119 Heading F2G A pipe joint between a pipe 1 of reinforced plastics material and the ends 2 of two metal pipes is formed by winding layers of reinforced plastics material on to ends 2 and extending the layers across the gap between the adjacent ends 2 to form the walls of pipe 1, the ends 2 having walls thicker than the walls in other parts of the metal pipes and having on their outer surfaces starting at their open ends a succession of annular ribs 3 and grooves 5 of increasing diameter to which the ends of the layers forming the walls of pipe 1 are anchored. The space between the innermost end surfaces of pipes 2 and the inner surface of pipe 1 is filled with a packing consisting of crack-stopping layer 8 of fibre or fabric reinforced resin and a connector 10 of fibre reinforced plastics material surrounded by protective layer 18, the ends of the connector 10 bearing or sealing rings 11 contained in grooves 16 in the respective end faces of pipes 2. Protective sleeves 9 surround the ends of pipe 1 and the centre part of the outer surface of pipe 1 is protected by layer 14 of soft elastic sealing compound which is poured into the space between sleeves 9 until it is flush with their outer surfaces. Pipes of different diameter may be coupled by such a joint the thickened end portion of the larger diameter pipe being tapered towards its axis so that its end internal diameter equals that of the smaller pipe and its grooves and collars are aligned with those of the smaller pipe to enable a plastics pipe of constant diameter to be built up between the two pipes. The wall of pipe 1 is built up by helically winding layers of resin impregnated reinforcing material in the space between the innermost pair of collars 3 until the space is filled thus forming a laminate shell over which a similar laminate shell is formed between the adjacent pairs of collars 3 until as shown in Fig. 2 three concentric shells have been formed. Additional helical layers may be wound in areas adjacent to grooves 5 and incompletely filled grooves are filled by a helical winding before forming the next laminate shell. The inner and outer walls of pipe 1 may have a small percentage of radially wound layers. Alternative forms of helically windings may be used in which adjacent layers are wound with different angles to the pipe axis or are wound so that their helices cross and the forms of winding may be different in each shell.
